Rose

I wanted to smack Cade for interrupting. But then again, I was about to jump Trevor right here in Violet’s shop and that would have been embarrassing—eventually. I decided to be grateful instead.

“I have to go, or I’m going to be late.” I said with a sigh. I would much rather take my clothes off and sit on Trevor’s lap all day, but I had to go and educate the youth of Sweetbriar instead. “What are you two doing today?”

“We’ll be solving crimes and kicking ass, like usual.” Cade answered, his cocky grin in place as he lounged in his chair.

“That sounds about right,” Trevor agreed. “Then after all the crime solving, I have the thing with Maddie. Will I see you tonight?”

“Come to my house when you’re done. I’ll make dinner,” I offered.

Cade choked on a laugh. “Don’t do it, man. She can’t cook.”

“I can heat stuff in the oven, Cade. Anyone can do that.” I glared at him before gathering my things.

“Except you burn almost everything. I’m not trying to be a dick, Rose. You know it’s true.” I stuck my tongue out at him because he was right. No matter how hard I tried, I could not cook, not even toast. I was a curse in the kitchen.

“Don’t worry, I don’t want you for your cooking.” Trevor said it with that smile that was just for me. My face heated and he winked at me again. For some reason, he seemed to like getting me all hot and bothered.

“Okay, okay—I don’t want to know why you want her,” Cade said. “All I’m saying is, order Chinese food, Rose. Or pick up a pizza. No one likes food poisoning.”

“Thanks for the advice, big bro.” I kissed Trevor as I stood up and noogied Cade as I hurried off.

“Later, Violet. Thanks.” I shouted from the doorway.

My workday flew by. I burst through the school’s entrance with a smile on my face and a lightness in my heart that I hadn’t felt—well, ever. It was a glorious October afternoon in Sweetbriar. All golden sky, fiery sunsets and crisp fall air. Colorful leaves were like confetti in the trees; waiting for a brisk wind to let them fly and decorate the sidewalks with shades of red and yellow. I walked toward the parking lot, crunching through the pretty leaves that partially covered it on the way to my car.

I went to Imperial Dragon and picked up Chinese food. I had already stopped at the store for treats and if the rain stayed away tonight, we could all make s’mores on my patio together. With haste, I rushed into the house. I had to clean up before Trevor got here with the kids. Luckily, I was messy and not dirty—meaning, I dusted and mopped and swept and vacuumed. I kept my kitchen and bathroom clean. What I did not do was put stuff away when I was done using it or keep up with my laundry. All my hampers were crammed full of dirty clothes, but the floor was visible, so that was good.
